Hamish & Jazz Hamish - Pelyma Whoops I'm White (brown pigmented cream w/ a white blaze and chest/NO other markings) - sire = black brindle & dam = blue - since Hamish is a brown pigmented cream we know that both his parents carry that gene, he could be a black, blue, brindle, blue brindle, fawn or blue fawn hidden by the cream "masking gene." The presence of the 3 blue puppies in this litter show that he must be either black or blue under the cream. Since the entire litter is blue dilute it is probably safe to consider him a blue. Jazz - Sandsprings Smart Cookie of Shandril (fawn/blue mask) - sire = red fawn & dam = red fawn parti - since Jazz is blue fawn, we know that both her parents carry that gene, she can only pass on the genes for red, blue dilute, and white parti Note: yellow, red and fawn are "lumped" together genetically
Hamish = AyAy (pure for red/fawn) Hamish is a brown pigmented cream with visible white and is dark enough to see the difference, Jazz a red fawn, and none of the puppies is pale - so we will assume the following: Hamish = CC (pure for complete expression of red/yellow and blue pigments) Hamish is a brown pigmented cream and the presence of the blue and blue fawn puppies tells us that he carries that gene, Jazz is a blue fawn. Since the litter is of a good size and ALL of the puppies are blue dilute, we have: Hamish = dd (pure for blue) Because Hamish is brown pigmented cream we can't see a mask (he may or may not have one) and we know that Jazz has a mask, as do at least 2 of the brindle puppies. Hamish = EE or Em (expresses dark pigment and may carry mask) We know that Hamish could have inherited brindle from his sire, and since there are brindles in the litter we know he carries it. Jazz is not brindle, so cannot have that gene. Hamish = Kkbr - dark, carrying brindle Since neither the parents nor any of the puppies are described as Roan we will assume the following: Hamish = rr (displays normal color and does not carry Roan) We already know that Hamish displays a small amount of white (he may still be a genetic solid color) and Jazz does not - but we know she carries it from her dam, but none of the puppies appears to display a significant amount of white. So now we know: Hamish = SS (solid) Not enough data to tell. CREAM - I am not aware of any genetic notation for this gene, but brown pigmented cream is recessive
Hamish - Pelyma Whoops I'm White - brown pigmented cream w/white = AyAy CC dd EE or Em Kkbrrr SS CREAM Genetic notation is simply a "short-hand" method of conveying information about the genes carried and/or displayed. Dominant genes are noted as UPPERCASE and are listed first at each locus, when they are present. Recessive genes are noted as lower case and are listed second at each locus, when a dominant is present. In the case of 2 dominants or 2 recessives at the same locus the one that is dominant over it's locus partner is listed first. Superscript letters provide futher description of the particular gene's actions. The above examples convey quick information about what colors these parents can be expected to produce: Hamish = AyAy CC dd EE or Em Kkbr rr SS AyAy = red/fawn, but this color is not displayed on the dog because the presence of the "K" gene inhibits it's expression and because the action of the "masking cream" gene hides the expression of the other color genes CC = full expression of pigment, not "washed out" in shade Jazz = AyAy CC dd EEm kk rr Ssp AyAy = pure for red/fawn, since Jazz is neither blue nor black she cannot carry the "K" gene as Hamish does solid blue = AyAy CC dd EE or Em Kk or kbr or rr SS or Ssp carrying CREAM All of Hamish and Jazz's puppies will carry "masking cream", since Hamish has no other gene to contribute at that locus. Also, they may carry white spotting from Jazz. All of the brindle puppies will carry non-brindle red/fawn. |
